"WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY" It used
to be called "The Minehead Flier" during the war, because of its slow
and measured pace to get West Somerset folk and loads of evacuee school
kids up to Taunton for school holiday trips to their homes in London.
Then Dr Beeching used his notorious axe and for years the railway line
between the county town and the Exmoor hinterland stood derelict. Along
came a band of enthusiasts and railway buffs who struggled to get a
viable steam service up and running, while the rest of the rail network
was going diesel. Their success story is told tonight by Don Bishop, of
West Huntspill. |
